Violist John Metcalfe
It is always exciting to meet others inspired by trees and I was thrilled when Jericho-based singer Steph Pirrie arranged for musician John Metcalfe and I to meet and discuss a creative collaboration - a conversation - to celebrate our shared interest during Artweeks. Composer, producer, and arranger to the likes of Peter Gabriel and Blur, John brings a rare live performance to Jericho's beautiful St. Barnabas Church, of his latest work, ‘Tree’. This stunning new album, out on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, celebrates our extraordinary relationship with trees. Coupled with gorgeous visuals from Jony Easterby, the music, performed by some of the UK’s finest string players - who played on countless Hollywood film scores and with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé and Coldplay - reflects an imagined 24 hour cycle in the life of a tree experienced by observing and listening to the ever-shifting interplay of light, colour and sound whilst exploring the intense and mystifying effect trees have on us all; our relationship with their physicality, their essence, and their importance to the future of our planet. The first half of the concert will feature John and I in conversation, discussing the significance of trees in our lives and the ways in which these have inspired our artistic practices. John's 'Tree' CD along with my prints and postcards will be available to buy alongside refreshments. Do join us!
